If you thought the internet went wild at the prospect of an Eleven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo adaptation, wait until they hear about the movie version of My Year of Rest and Relaxation.
Yep, an adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh's best-selling novel is coming. Set in the year 2000 in New York City, the book follows an unnamed female protagonist, who attempts to sleep for an entire year, following an escalation in her use of prescription drugs. It manages to be both sad and funny and profound and superficial, all at the same time.
As for the film version? We'll have to wait and see; but here's everything we know so far.
What was the first we heard of My Year of Rest and Relaxation?
Back in 2019, Margot Robbie and her husband Tom Ackerley's production company LuckyChap Entertainment purchased the rights for the novel, optioning it for the movie treatment.
Then, in 2023, the book's original author Moshfegh told IndieWire that she had written the script for the film version, and that while it differs from the original text, it is definitely in the works. "I have no idea about the timeline on that, but hopefully sometime," she added.
Most recently, LuckyChap Entertainment have produced Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn, so we would expect big things.

Who's in the My Year of Rest and Relaxation cast?
Well, Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (who most recently worked on Poor Things but is also famous for The Favourite and The Killing of a Sacred Deer) is working on the script alongside the original author.
Emma Stone, who worked with Yorgos on both Poor things and The Favourite "declined to answer" Dazed when they asked if she would act in it - but we could see her making the perfect protagonist.

What else do we know about My Year of Rest and Relaxation?
To be honest, not much - details have been kept heavily under wraps about the project which is not out of character for Yorgos. When Ottessa was asked by i-D magazine about the adaptation, she replied, "I think… I think that he would prefer I don’t speak about it."
She added, "What I can say is I have been working on the screenplay. The way things work in movies is it takes a lot of time, because there are so many moving pieces and so many important roles. You have to factor in other people’s lives, my life, and everything has to come together at the right time. And this has just been something that has been just slowly brewing."
We're so excited.
