Sunday's episode of Game of Thrones featured something even more rare than dragonglass — a sex scene that was purely romantic. Daenerys's trusted aides Missandei and Grey Worm finally consummated their slow-burning relationship on the eve of Grey Worm's departure for Casterly Rock, and shippers everywhere rejoiced.
In addition to being the first (and possibly last, if Grey Worm never makes it back) sex scene between Missandei and Grey Worm, it was also actress Nathalie Emmanuel's first nude scene on the show. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Nathalie explained why she loved the scene so much and why she felt so comfortable on set while shooting it. “When I read the script the first thing I thought was that it’s a big deal for these two characters and also it’s a nude scene and you can’t help but think about that,” she told EW. “You’re like, ‘Okay, I’m getting naked.’ And that was really strange for Jacob [Anderson] and I because we’ve danced around that scenario and we’ve become good mates and now we got to be naked around each other. But it was fine and, obviously, done really respectfully. Whether you’ve done it many times, or none at all, it’s a big deal. You feel like you’re giving something quite vulnerable and, yes, it’s hard.”
Nathalie also praised the fact that the director chose not to include full frontal nudity for Grey Worm, who like all Unsullied soldiers is a eunuch. “The scene keeps everybody guessing about certain things,” she said. Like many Game of Thrones viewers, Nathalie appreciates the Missandei/Grey Worm relationship because it's one of the few light things in a world filled with so much violence and darkness. “Amongst this chaos they’re like this beacon of something sweet and pure and beautiful,” she said. “There’s love displayed in this show in so many ways but it’s normally so tragic. They have tragedy in their past but they found something useful from that." Grey Worm and Missandei forever!
