Have a little faith in Neptune! In astrology, Neptune is the ruler of intuition, enchantment, glamour, soulful artistry, and the deep healing that begins when we ask ourselves, “Is there a possibility of another way?”
Neptune in Astrology
Like Pluto and Uranus, Neptune is one of the outer planets, meaning it's slower-moving and affects the bigger-picture themes of our lives than the inner planets, like Mercury and Venus, which change signs more frequently and have a bigger effect on our day-to-day realities. Neptune spends approximately 14 years in each sign (with occasional shorter dips into neighboring signs when it's retrograde) and takes 160-ish years to move through the whole zodiac. Back in 2012, Neptune moved into Pisces and it will stay there until 2026. This is first time it's been in Pisces since 1862!
Neptune as a Generational Planet
Along with Uranus and Pluto, Neptune is sometimes called a "generational planet." Because it stays in one sign for so long (14-ish years), an entire generation will share a Neptune sign (or two, depending on how you define a generation). Looking at where Neptune is in the sky is more helpful when trying to understand long-term trends and big-picture changes than day-to-day events. Compare Neptune to Mercury, which moves through a new sign every three-ish weeks. Mercury is called a "personal planet" because it has such a big effect on your personal day-to-day realities (like when you blame Mercury Retrograde for making you miss your subway stop).
Neptune as a Ruling Planet
Neptune is the ruling planet of Pisces. Which makes sense, right? Neptune is named after the Roman god of the ocean, and Pisces is represented by the fish. Plus, Neptune is the planet of magic, mysticism, and spirituality, which fits Pisces' vibe so well. If you have a Pisces Sun or Rising sign, Neptune's movements are extra important to you and will affect you more strongly than other people.
One caveat: Neptune is the modern ruler of Pisces, and the traditional ruler of Pisces is Jupiter. That's because Neptune wasn't discovered until 1846, long after all the ruling planets had been assigned! Some astrologers will use Neptune as Pisces' ruling planet, others will use Jupiter, and some will use both. If you're working with an astrologer one-on-one—like you hired one for a birth chart reading for your b-day—you can ask them about it!
