Sebastin Yatras "Dos Oruguitas" 'Encnato' Lyrics and Translation, in Time for the Oscars

If you think you’re the only one who cried during the movie Encanto, think again. Singer Sebastián Yatra (aka the ~angelic~ voice behind “Dos Oruguitas”) is right there with you. In an interview with CNN en Español, he admitted that “to watch a Disney movie about Colombia that shows different elements that are so specific about my country, the people, the family…knowing that I am part of that, I started crying like a little child.” Although Encanto is laden with moments that will def make you ugly-cry, one of the most emotional and poignant parts juuuuust so happens to take place in the third act when “Dos Oruguitas” plays over Abuela Alma’s heartbreaking flashback to a moment with Abuelo Pedro.

If that’s not enough, Sebastián underscores the significance of the fact that not only is the song played in full Spanish without subtitles but it also “is the first time that Disney leaves a song sung in Spanish playing all over the planet. So it is not only in the United States and throughout Latin America that they hear ‘Dos Oruguitas’ in Spanish but also in China, Russia, Afghanistan…wherever it is playing, it is in Spanish.” BRB, crying part 1,000.

Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song this year, “Dos Oruguitas” is perfectly encapsulated by Encanto writer Lin-Manuel Miranda in an interview with Vulture: “The idea was to make a song that sounded like it had been around for 100 years, being sung on street corners.” The song’s key metaphor is that of a caterpillar’s transformation into a butterfly.

The writer recalls:

“I was spitballing with Jared Bush and Charise Castro Smith, the codirectors and writers on the film, and said, ‘Well, butterflies are just kind of nature’s original miracle in a way, right?’ These caterpillars start building this thing with no understanding of why they’re doing it, and they’re going to completely destroy themselves and become a new thing. I thought, What if the folk song has these two caterpillars who are in love? Who have to separate and they don’t know why and they don’t want to? But they have to. Because that’s how they become the next version of themselves. It felt like a really beautiful nature metaphor for what the family was going through en masse. And also the painful separation that we’re seeing in front of us onscreen.”

Although Lin-Manuel initially struggled to write the ballad (as “Dos Oruguitas” was his first-ever song written in Spanish), he admits he kept chipping away at it with the help of a thesaurus that rarely left his side. In fact, he said he began to have dreams in the language again for the first time since his childhood in Puerto Rico.

“Dos Oruguitas” Spanish lyrics

Dos oruguitas enamoradas
Pasan sus noches y madrugadas
Llenas de hambre
Siguen andando y navegando un mundo
Que cambia y sigue cambiando
Navegando un mundo
Que cambia y sigue cambiando

Dos oruguitas paran el viento
Mientras se abrazan con sentimiento
Siguen creciendo, no saben cuándo

(Woh, oh, oh, oh)
(Woh, oh, oh, oh)
(Woh, oh, oh, oh)
(Woh, oh, oh, oh, oh)
(Woh, oh, oh, oh)
(Woh, oh, oh, oh)
(Woh, oh, oh, oh)

Dos oruguitas desorientadas
En dos capullos bien abrigadas
Con sueños nuevos
Ya solo falta hacer lo necesario
En el mundo que sigue cambiando
Tumbando sus paredes
Ahí viene nuestro milagro
Nuestro milagro
Nuestro milagro
Nuestro milagro

Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer a parte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirás
Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
Su propio futuro

Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer a parte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirás
Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
Su propio futuro

Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer a parte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirás
Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
Su propio futuro

“Two Oruguitas” English lyrics

Two oruguitas
In love and yearning
Spend every evening
And morning learning
To hold each other
Their hunger burning
To navigate a world
That turns and never stops turning
Together in this world
That turns and never stops turning

Two oruguitas
Against the weather
The wind grows colder
But they’re together
They hold each other
No way of knowing
They’re all they have for shelter
And something inside them is growing
They long to stay together
But something inside them is growing

Ay, oruguitas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to grow
To fall apart, to reunite
Wonders await you
Just on the other side
Trust they’ll be there
And start to prepare
The way for tomorrow

Ay, oruguitas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to grow
To fall apart, to reunite

Wonders await you
Just on the other side
Trust they’ll be there
Start to prepare
The way for tomorrow

Two oruguitas
Cocooned and waiting
Each in their own world
Anticipating
What happens after
The rearranging?

And so afraid of change
In a world that never stops changing
So let the walls come down
The world will never stop changing
(Never stop changing)
(Never stop changing)
(Never stop changing)

Ay, mariposas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
Don’t look behind you
Fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow

Ay, mariposas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
Don’t look behind you
Fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow

Ay, mariposas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
Don’t look behind you
Fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow
