Ragdolls
Ragdolls are popular pets because they like humans a whole lot—so much so that they often follow their owners around the house from morning till night. If you’re looking for a 15-pound semi-long-haired BFF who’s stuck to you like glue, this could be your cat soul mate. By the way, Taylor Swift’s latest addition to her ever-growing cat fam is a Ragdoll, so you know it’s a legit breed.
2Maine Coons
Maine coons are well-known for their big size (the most famous among them have clocked in at 30 pounds!), but the reason they’re such a popular house cat breed is because of their friendly personalities. People sometimes compare Maine coons to dogs because they’re so sociable—they love to play and join you in whatever you’re doing. My family had a Maine coon, and he once followed me into the SHOWER. So if you want a cat that doesn’t need a lot of attention, I wouldn’t recommend a Maine coon. Think of them as a quieter puppy you won’t have to walk every day.
3American Shorthairs
American shorthairs have long lifespans, so they’re a popular choice among families who want to give their kids a pet to grow up with. (I’m not crying, YOU’RE crying.) They’re also known to be super sweet with kids and dogs (!!!), so they could be an especially good fit for you if you already have babies (of the human or the furry variety!) in your life. I almost forgot to mention—these guys are pretty low maintenance, too, meaning you won’t have to brush them very often. Translation: They’re fluffy lil angels.

4Scottish Folds
Depending on how much of a Swiftie you are, you might already be familiar with the ~elite cat breed~ known as Scottish fold. They get their name from their folded ears, and their large eyes give them a pretty distinct look. Scottish fold is a medium-size breed (9 to 13 pounds), and they’re, like, obsessed with their owners. They live for human affection, and they’re not spooked by loud noises, which means they’re a good fit if you live in a big city.
5Somali
These kitties have a distinctive ombré fur that comes in four gorgeous shades. Somali thrive when they have a dependable person who pays a lot of attention to them, and they love to play as much as they’re here to cuddle. They’re also super-smart cats, so don’t be surprised if they find a way to get the catnip down from the top shelf when you’re at work.
6Persians
Persian cats are so cute, they look like freakin’ stuffed animals but they’re REAL. They’re *the most* popular cat breed, both because of how beautiful they are and also thanks to their sweet personalities. Sometimes it takes Persians a bit of time to warm up to a new environment, but once they settle down a bit, they’ll be super comfortable in your home, even if you live in a more chaotic area. You do have to brush them often, but it’s worth it.

7Abyssinians
Yes, Abyssinians are pretty, but don’t be so shallow! These kitties are popular because they’re geniuses. Abyssinians are super smart, and they’re one of the oldest cat breeds in the world. One important detail: Abyssinians aren’t the most cuddly cat breed. They do like human companionship, but they show it simply by being near you rather than on top of you.
8Birmans
A Birman is easy to spot by its distinctive blue eyes as well as its sweet brown nose. They come in a variety of colors, but they’re all born white—they develop different-hued fur as they grow up. Birmans are really sweet and quiet, and they can get along with pretty much anyone. A very low-maintenance cat breed.
9Exotic Shorthairs
Exotics look a bit like Persian cats, but their hair is shorter. Plus, their little faces are slightly more squished, which just adds to the overall cuteness. Exotics are a playful breed and will want to chase strings and whatnot for hours when they’re young. But when they get older, they’ll settle into a relaxed personality. They’ll age with you!

10Bengals
Bengals are a great fit for dog moms looking to expand the fam. They aren’t bothered by pups, kids, or loud environments, as long as you introduce them to new things gently. They’re really playful too, acting like kittens even when they get older. And Bengals basically look like miniature cheetahs, so you’ll feel super stylish bringing one home.
11Oriental Shorthairs
Orientals can be a bit of a nuisance to their owners, but only because they’ll love you sooo much. They’re the type of cat that will lie on your laptop while you’re trying to get work done, climb on the counter when you’re in the middle of cooking dinner, and mew at the door if you lock them out while you take a shower. But they can be really rewarding animals and will satisfy your need for companionship. Orientals are more than happy to be lap cats, so scoop one up if you’re looking for a kitty that will stick by your side no matter what.
12Devon Rex
The Devon rex breed is frequently compared to dogs, as they want to be with their humans always—just like a puppy. They’ll follow you everywhere, but they don’t need much attention. Devons just want to be part of whatever you’re doing—they even get bummed out if they’re left alone for too long! These guys max out at around 9 pounds, so they’re a good choice if you live in a small space.

13British Shorthairs
British shorthairs are fluffy perfection, and they embody the ideal balance between social and independent. They like to play with adults and children, but they don’t love to be carried around. A British shorthair will sit on your lap when they feel like it, but you can’t force the love on them. You’re probably most familiar with their blue-gray coats, but they can also be tabby or even colorpoint.
