The Crown season 6: Who was Victoria Stable?

The first part of season six of The Crown has just dropped on Netflix and it's a seriously emotional watch focusing on the on the final month of Princess Diana's life. Episode four 'Aftermath' goes into the immediate impact of her death on the Royal Family. The episode then ends with a dedication to Victoria Stable, leaving many fans to wonder, who was Victoria Stable and why was the final episode of part one dedicated to her?

In case you haven't watched the credits for episode four, they feature a dedication to Victoria Stable, saying: "In Memoriam, Victoria Stable, 1955 - 2023."

Victoria was an archive producer and worked for decades in the archive industry, on shows such as South Bank Show, Weekend World, Spitting Image, and of course The Crown. As part of her roles on various shows she would provide researchers, writers, actors, and directors with the materials they needed to create the show.

As part of her work on all six series of The Crown she worked to ensure the lives of the Royal Family and the British Government were depicted accurately.

Last year while appearing on The Crown's official podcast hosted by Edith Bowman, Victoria explained her role in more detail saying: "An archive producer is really an experienced film researcher, which is a bit more explanatory. I’m responsible for finding anything that has any copyright invested in it that doesn’t belong to The Crown. So, anything we haven’t generated ourselves, be it sound or moving footage. I only do the moving footage. I don’t get bogged down with stills."

She went onto explain how she also helped some of the cast with their roles, such as Khalid Abdalla, who plays Dodi Fayed, by finding rare footage of the real Dodi speaking on camera.

"In season five, Khalid Abdalla, who plays Dodi... there’s so little footage of Dodi; I certainly hadn’t found anything of him speaking. Khalid sent me a random photograph he’d found online and you could see a news camera. He was being interviewed somewhere and I sort of worked it out," she said. "Long before he ever met Diana, he was in a court case in Toronto and you know, again, I was looking through old back copies of the Toronto Star and things like that. But anyway, there was this court case and the day he came out of court, I think he was just giving evidence or something, somebody interviewed him. There was only five seconds of him speaking, but we did find it."

Victoria sadly passed away in spring earlier this year at age 68, a few weeks after filming on series six of The Crown had wrapped.

Following her passing many of her former colleagues shared messages of condolences in her obituary on FOCAL International.

"Victoria and I worked together on the last season of The Crown, specifically on the accompanying Beneath the Crown documentary series," they said. "Without her expert archive knowledge and her ability to find and provide footage, the series would not have been the same. Not only was she professionally excellent, she was an absolute pleasure to engage with; for both she will be sorely missed."
