If there's one thing that's united the internet in the last week, it's been the release of Gypsy Rose Blanchard from prison. The 32-year-old was released on 28 December 2023 after serving eight years for second-degree murder and since her release she's taken over TikTok and X (formerly known as Twitter), with thousands of people posting about the young woman. Who is Gypsy Rose Blanchard?
In 2016 Gypsy Rose Blanchard was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the second degree murder of her mother Clauddinnea “Dee Dee” Blanchard. Gypsy Rose admitted to convincing her then boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to kill her mother.
Throughout her childhood Gypsy Rose was the victim of her mother’s munchausen-by-proxy. Dee Dee spent the majority of Gypsy Rose's childhood lying to everyone including her daughter about the state of Gypsy's health, convincing everyone she had leukaemia and muscular dystrophy. She convinced doctors to perform invasive treatments on Gypsy.
Despite having no health problems Gypsy used a wheelchair, feeding tube and oxygen tank. And during her trial in court, Gypsy also claimed her mother beat her and chained her to a bed.
As she grew older Gypsy soon began to realise she was in fact not ill and tried to runaway. However this failed.
Around 2012 she met Nicholas Godejohn on a Christian dating website and as well as falling in love the pair plotted to kill Dee Dee in 2015. The pair went through with the plan and Gypsy supplied the knife and hid in the bathroom as Godejohn stabbed Dee Dee to death.
They were arrested in Wisconsin and in 2016 Gypsy confessed to convincing Godejohn to killing her mother and pleaded guilty to second degree murder. In 2019 Godejohn was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole.
Why is Gypsy Rose Blanchard in the news now?
During Gypsy Rose's trial, the uniqueness and extremity of her case attracted a lot of public attention and over the years her case and childhood has been the subject of numerous true crime documentaries and TV series, including the 2019 Hulu series The Act starring Joey King. Over the course of her trial Gypsy Rose garnered a lot of sympathy from the public with many viewing her as the victim of child abuse.
After serving eight years of her 10-year sentence, Gypsy was allowed to leave prison on parole on 28th December, reigniting a revived interested in Gypsy and how she will live her life now that she is free.
